American Heroes

American HeroesI figured I’d give a little bit of American history a shot at my last library visit. American Heroes caught mt eye, so I gave it a shot. It looked like something Scumbag would read.

I gotta say, it just wasn’t for me. While there were some interesting and new facts for sure, it was a bit too academic for what I was expecting. I just never got into it.

I’ve always preferred world history over US for some reason, and this may of had something to do with it.

The book was well written with focus given to individuals who traditionally don’t get the spotlight when discussing early American history.

If you’re a US history buff unlike myself you’d probably want to check this one out. Otherwise get a cool dog book which I am doing now.

Kickball Season 3 – Week 3

This would the first kickball game in 4 seasons that I’d have to sit out due to a recent serious elbow injury. While I was really bummed to not be playing, I knew that the Badgers still had plenty of firepower to win against a much revamped and improved Vicious and Delicious.

We got off to our now customary early start, up 3-0 after the first inning. This has been huge for us this season, as it really relaxes the team and we seem to focus better with the early cushion.

I was really impresse with our fielding once again. We play so well as a team, backing one another up and just plain old playing well together. Our situational kicking was really great as well, with our kicks advancing runners even when outs where made. I think we really took a step forward in that regard.

V & D were very tough and would soon tie things up. A competitive tension could be felt during the last few innings. There were some questionable bunt calls on both sides (a very gray area always), but in the end fair play did seem to prevail.

The Honey Badgers held on 6-4 to stay undefeated on the season! A very tough but exciting victory.

Week of Elbow Dislocations

This has not been a fine week for my right elbow.

My first instance of elbow dislocation happened while attempting a slide into third base during a kickball game. Immediately knew it was out upon impact and rolled around hoping it would find it’s way back into place on it’s own.

Upon laying on my back and announcing “I’m hurt bad”, I could clearly see that the bottom bone of my elbow was clearly out of place. Upon rising I began to think of anything that could help me try to get it back into place.

I decided that the soccer goal post would be worth and shot, and it helped me to knock it back into place! I was able to continue playing, minus fielding and pitching and would go to Urgent Care afterwards to make sure that it was in place and there wasn’t too much ligament damage as well.

Let me say that the folks at Atlantic Care Urgent Care in Somers Point were great! They were so kind and polite, I felt like a dear aunt was taking care of me. They x-rayed me and all seemed well.

Two nights later I was hanging out with the Honey Badgers on the boardwalk. We played some mini-golf which seemed fine on the still sore elbow. I was being extra cautious the whole time.

On my last putt on the last hole, I accidentally leaned against the wall with my right arm. As my bad luck would have it, my stupid elbow caved in and a different bone was not out of place in my elbow. This one hurt very, very bad and I paced around the boardwalk until I could gather myself and decide what to do.

After some attempts of putting it back in myself , I knew it was futile and a trip to the emergency was in order. Sadly I parked all the way on Bay Ave. so my journey back to my car was quite a treck. I was in pure survival mode, pretty much crossing streets with barely looking to get there ASAP. While passing a group of teenagers, I gave them the most evil of stares just in case they had any intentions of messing with my wounded self.

Getting into and out of the car was pretty tough, but I was able to and then drove myself to Shore Memorial. I ran into a friend with her three year old in the ER. I really hope everything went well for them, they’re so nice and I can only imagine how tough  such a situation can be for a parent.

Once I got admitted I was x-rayed right away. This was pretty tough, with things our of place I couldn’t do much if any bending for the x-rays. I joked with the guy and he was really nice about everything.

When the doctor finally arrived he invited me to view the x-rays with him which I thought was really cool of him. I realized that he was in a grade below me in school, and he really took good care of me the rest of the night. Unfortunately the top bone somehow had gotten misplaced beneath the bottom bone in the elbow. He’d never seen this before, the x-ray was comical in a sick twisted way.

He made several attempts at refraction of the elbow. Each attempt hurt like hell, but I knew he meant well. They offered pain killers each time, but I declined thinking that I could weather this storm then drive myself home instead of having to bother someone so late at night for a ride.

After numerous failed attempts another doctor came in help out. I knew that I was in for some crazy stuff at this point, I could tell that they were excited with the challenge my elbow had been presenting them.

Well good cop doctor held my tricep and elbow area while bad cop doctor pulled and twisted on my forearm as hard as he could. I had to press down with my right leg with all my might and pin my shoulders back as well if we were to have any chance with this.

When my wrist would get turned around the pushed toward me, well that was the most painful thing I’d ever endured. We had to give it a few shots to finally get it to fall back in, with me taking a 10 second or so break to crack a joke and refocus for the next excruciating attempt.

When someone announced, “I think it’s in!”, I immediately attempted to move around. Right away I knew it was and was thrilled. Give high-fives with my functioning arm (not a good idea but I was so excited).

Through this whole ordeal, I was silent and so focused on ignoring pain (which was bountiful). I was asked if I was on drugs numerous times throughout the night due to my lack of reaction to my discomfort. Not sure why, but I’ve never been one to complain much. I did give a few grunts and a growl here and there toward the end when everything was out of place though.

They gave me a splint to keep my elbow out of trouble until I can see a specialist in a few days.

Pretty crazy stuff, and not something I would wish upon anyone!

Kickball Season 3 – Week 2

In our second game of the season we were facing off against Kicking Grass. They seemed to be a combination of several teams from last season, and all their guys could kick pretty deep. So the Honey Badgers knew we were in for a worthy challenge.

We got off to a quick start. Just kept a steady dose of hits from the top of our lineup to get us 4 early runs. Defensively Kicking Grass would seriously threaten with runners on base, but we were able to get out of the jams unscathed. Yet more solid fielding for the Badgers.

In the second inning Caitlin boomed a kick over the drawn in left fielder. It was pretty impressive (as were several of her kicks that day, much more power behind them this week), and while she had an easy double, was thrown out stretching it into a triple She wasn’t alone in with impressive kicking, Lauren really showed his great kicking that we were used to seeing last year. I do believe she’s found her kick now (much to our opponents dismay).

I did peg a girl running to first. Despite the jokes I got from my teammates, and the disapproval from her body language it was a soft peg and much safer than if I had tried to beat her to the bag. I really didn’t want to chance a collision.

Kicking Grass would get on the board the next inning with 3 runs. While we were continuing to kick fairly well, we weren’t driving in runs leaving many base runners stranded in the middle innings. This allowed them to stay in the game and apply pressure to us.

While running to third I attempting a head first slide hoping the third baseman might bobble the ball. Unfortunately my wrist caught the ground and my right elbow got dislocated. I knew right away something bad had happened, it was pretty gross looking. I tried rolling around a bit hoping it would pop back in on it’s own. It hadn’t yet so I rolled on my back and announced, “I’m hurt bad” so that everyone knew to stop play. Upon getting up I immediately looked for something to attempt to drive my elbow back into place. I figured to use the soccer post and moved it a bit in my effort. Success, the elbow was back in place and I was not fielding or pitching for the remainder of the game.

From there the Honey Badgers just played tough. Just when it looked like the tide was going to turn, John B. made another amazing catch robbing the opponent of a scoring opportunity. He’s been playing  left field in an entirely different league all season, with each big catch firing up the team to find a way to play better themselves.

Perhaps the finest piece of kickball teamwork would unfold in the sixth inning. One of the Kicking Grass guys boomed a kick into right way past Geoff. Geoff didn’t hesitate our pout, he just turned around and chased it down. Dustin playing center for an absent Kevin immediately got in place for the relay. He then got it to the infield where John K. threw a perfect strike literally inches from home plate to peg the runner out. It was pretty amazing to watch and to see how the team reacted to the play was great. We’ve got a really great bunch this year.

We were able to tack on an extra run and held on to secure a victory. It wasn’t easy, but we found a way to hold onto our lead against a solid team.

This was another great victory for the Honey Badgers. It’s great that we were able to win such a close and hard fought game.

Pistol – The Pete Maravich Story

PistolAfter reading many fine works of fiction, I found myself a bit stumped at what to read next. So I walked around the library a bit and figured I was due for some nonfiction. Eventually I guess I found myself at the biography section (and the very squeaky floor of the library).

I remember hearing much of Pistol Pete growing up with his crazy passes and scoring. So I figured why not, let’s give Pistol a shot.

What a fine treat this turned out to be. Towards the end it gets pretty sad and downright tragic with his early exit from life. Even though I knew he died much too young, it was still very sad to read.

I also found it very interesting how much they focused on his father Press early on. I hadn’t realized how much Press had contributed to basketball as well as Pistol had.

This was very well written and I found myself rooting for him at times, especially when he was in the NBA. This was a good, solid read even if you’re not into basketball nor have any idea of whom Pistol Pete was.

A Dance With Dragons

A Dance with DragonsTook me almost three weeks, but I finally finished up A Dance With Dragons. This was definitely a lengthy book, and I was eager to find our how things were fairing up in northern Westeros.

Again, nobody is off limits in this series, with some pretty major twists coming at the end. I think I see when this tale is going, but I’ve incorrectly thought this in the past, so who knows.

By the end of the book, it’s official: winter has come. So now I’m really looking forward to what happens next, but figure I will have to wait a long time for the next book to be written.

More good stuff, but I gotta admit I do have to check with the charts at the end of the book to make sense of all of the subplots and storylines going on. It’s some pretty massive stuff going on.
