First Camping Adventure

tentWhen I’m running early for work, I’ll stop at Target to just walk around and pick up some stuff that I might need. It’s actually been very productive for me. However, there has been a certain aisle that has caught my attention for several months now, the camping section.

I can’t explain why, but I’ve been drawn to the tents, sleeping bags, lanterns, flash lights, chairs, knives, gadgets, etc. I’d find myself really checking all the different gear out and in great detail.

Well a week or so ago, I figured with the pleasant November we’ve been having that if I were to finally give camping a shot, now might be my last chance until it warms up again in the spring. Two people came to mind who might just accept this crazy spontaneous mission, the Shepherd and Dustin.

So I asked, and yes they were in. Why not?

I then went on a camping shopping spree. I bought the best 2 person tent in the store (by the way it was $30 cheaper at Target than Dicks) and a really nice 30 degree sleeping bag. Quality stuff. I also picked up a rechargeable LED Lantern, which still amazes me with it’s brightness. I also threw in some rope and skewers for good measure.

We searched camping sites on state parks, and found a wilderness style site nearby in Wharton State Forest. So we drove out there on a Saturday afternoon and paid the $2 per night fee in Batsto, when the woman working there drew on a map where the site was.

Luckily the guys were paying attention to the directions, my attention was fixed on the various Jersey Devil merchandise on display, Some very cool and creepy stuff.

We arrived at the camp site a little past 3:30 pm. So we immediately got to work to get setup and a fire going before sunset. Setting up my tent was so much fun! It was super easy, with many of the parts color coded, so it was a cinch to figure out just what went where. I’m glad I got the nicer smaller tent, it would really payoff later in the night.

We then all set out to collect as much fire wood as possible, really wanted that fire to be going strong before darkness took over. I was really proud to see everyone working so hard gathering wood. There wasn’t a lazy soul to be found. Though much of it was wet from a rain two days before, the majority of it worked just fine.

The jackpot was struck when we stumbled upon a thick fallen tree. Wisely an axe was brought along, and we went to work breaking it down into smaller, more manageable pieces.

Dustin worked that fire for a while and just as darkness stormed it, had a great fire going. It was so quiet and peaceful out. Well expect for the idiot playing the trumpet a couple of sites over. If you’re reading this, you really have to practice more often.

Between the three of us, we’re a very silent bunch. Very few words were exchanged, but we all had a great time nonetheless.

It really is amazing how much brighter the stars are when you’re out in the woods away from all the lights that come with modern living. It was very cool to just stare up at.

As the night went on the temperature did start to drop a bit. Probably around 40 or so, not too bad, but still on the cold side. My sleeping bag and tent were so cozy and warm, both excellent purchases. I actually slept fairly well all things considering, I think I got between 4-5 hours of sleep. Sleeping on the ground was nice, I have some old back injuries and soft beds usually beat me up pretty well.

I got up and out of my tent around 8:00 in the morning. Placed our unused wood back into the forest (I believe that’s the proper thing to do), then watched the other guys eventually wake up too. I really enjoyed the camping adventure and am really glad that we went out and actually did it instead of just talking about it. Definitely something that I would like to try again.

Dodgeball Week 7

dead honey badgerWow, this was not a good night for the Honey Badgers. Our only bright spot was our girls playing against the Ghostbuster girls. It was really exciting to watch them both play, and the Honey Badger squad did have some great moments against them.

Our guys on the other hand, well we really just stunk it up last night. I personally had a very bad night playing. My shoulder was sore all day, and in warm ups I knew that I wouldn’t be getting much if anything on my throws that night. It’s a lousy feeling, and I felt bad that I wasn’t able to contribute as much as I’d liked to of.

Our second match of the night was against the winless Lightning Donkeys. Unfortunately they are no longer winless, which really stung. The match was very close, but they did edge us and it pretty much summed up our underachieving night.

Our two replacement guys Matt and Jordan did fill in admirably for Jared our with a neck injury and Mike who had other engagements to attend to.

The only really positive thing I got out of last night was that in both games I have the opponents tell me that I displayed sportsmanship. I guess that’s a nice compliment to receive, but I’d of preferred that they were upset that I had thrown too hard at them instead.

We’ll get the week off then hope to rebound and go into the playoffs with some momentum if at all possible.

Seal Team Six

Seal Team SixWhile at the library I decided to peruse the non-fiction section this time out. I stumbled upon the military/war section (if there is indeed such a section) and recalled that Seal Team Six was recommended as a good book a few months back.

Growing up playing G.I. Joe and certain that I’d of killed countless Soviets by this time in my life (apparently I didn’t take that path over the years), I figured it’d be a pretty interesting read. It was very interesting to get such a great insight into the life of the elite special forces. In this case a member of Seal Team Six.

The training and preparation was pretty amazing. These guys are so prepared for almost any situation you could ever think of.

It’s very amazing to hear a first account of their heroics. They really do an amazing and dangerous job. I doubt most of the fools here even realize just how dangerous a place this world can really be outside of their suburbs and luxury cars.

Hacksaw Jim Duggan

Hacksaw Jim DugganWhile on lunch break a week or 2 ago Scumbag and I noticed a new toy and collectibles store had opened near our precious lunch destinations. Mike’s or something along those lines. Not only was I in action figure heaven upon walking up to the new storefront, but we both noticed a subtle flyer on their door.

The Hacksaw Jim Duggan would be there for 2 hours on a Saturday night signing autographs! Then and there Scumbag and I made a pact that we would most definitely be in attendance when the legend arrived. A once in a lifetime opportunity like this couldn’t go wasted.

True to our words we did make the journey on that fateful Saturday evening. Scumbag also brought along two loyal fans to accompany us as well. Arriving there, there was a decent line for such a new and small store. We all waited patiently for the legend to emerge. Was he already here? Behind the wall? Only time would tell.

Then suddenly from behind the back wall, he appeared and gave a thunderous trademarked “Hoooooo!” The crowd erupted, returning the call. Yet Hacksaw wasn’t satisfied. He thought he was in a library and demanded the crowd give him a “Hoooooo!” that would satisfy him. We all dug in deep and pleased the legend. He then went to the back and began the sign and greet process.

Scumbag brought his WWE Championship Belt that I had gotten him for his birthday a couple of years back. Hacksaw was signing 2×4’s for his many fans as well.

What a nice guy he was. He took the time to speak to each and every fan individually, and really seemed to genuinely care. Watching him interact with the little kids was really great, the fans still really get fired up by him.

I’m really glad we went out to meet Hacksaw, it was a great mission.

Dodgeball Week 6

honey badgerLast nights game against the Terror Squad was so much fun. I’m really bummed that we lost in overtime, but was still very proud of how many of our teammates had stepped up last . Geoff and Jared really played a lot better last night.

Our girls played very well last night, winning the majority of their games. It was great to watch them truly dominate most of the night.

Our guys started a little slow, but as the night went on began to play better and win some matches. At one point we were up 7-5 but the Terror Squad went on a little tear and we found ourselves down 8-7 with a must win by our guys to force an overtime.

I sat out the last name, my groin injury was really starting to burn up a bit (weird, but that’s the best way to explain it) and my shoulder was beginning to show some signs of fatigue (yes I’m an old broken down man). Even with all the pressure they won the match and forced an overtime.

Overtime is 3 co-ed matches, with at least one girl per team. Our squad for the first game involved most of our hot players on the night. The first overtime game was pretty tough, there were some hard throws all around, and some catches for our side as well. As soon as I saw their last guy think about pickup up a ball a released a good hard throw and knew he was out before it left my hand.

Unfortunately the Terror Squad did go on to win the next 2 overtime matches and take the game. In the 3rd overtime match, when we were both down to 3 a team, a threw a pretty solid throw but the opponent just made a very solid and clutch catch. It was low and fast, and I’d of thrown it that way again and taken my chances, but he stepped up and held on. I felt bad at that point, not only was I out we down to 2 players, but they now had 4 strong and would go on to win.

A great competitive night. A little too much whining and yelling at the poor ref at times for my taste, but still a lot of fun overall.

Thunder Dog

20111105-130135.jpgNot sure what to read next, but a dog on a book cover caught my eye. I’m a sucker for dogs, even horrible dog movies. The title was Thunder Dog, and I had no idea what to expect.

The book was about a man and his guide dogs amazing escape from the World Trade Center on 9/11. It was a pretty amazing tale, how their calmness and a pretty amazing guide dog got them both to safety during the horrific event.

Being a web developer who takes accessibility very seriously, it was very rewarding to hear just how beneficial technology can be to the blind.

A very solid read, and yet again a dog hasn’t let me down.
