Final Fantasy XIII

Despite how busy I’ve been recently, I had to purchase Final Fantasy XIII the day it came out and play through it. It’s been a tradition of mine since I got the very first Final Fantasy at Jamesway for the NES. I’m pretty sure it was the first $50 game that I had gotten at the time.

This installment didn’t disappoint, and it’s really amazing to see just how far the series and technology has come over the years. The overall production values put into this game were simply amazing. I can’t imagine just how many hours must’ve went into making it, it was like a 55+ hour hollywood movie.

XIII was a lot different than the previous one’s I’ve played, but the majority of the changes were welcomed. The combat and leveling up took a little adjustment for me, but didn’t take too long to make sense.

I think from start to finish this game took me 55 hours to play through, or about 3 months. So you do get your moneys worth with this one. The artwork was really impressive, there’s some very talented people working at Square-Enix. I did wish that there were some more Chocobos in the game

Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift

Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Secrets of the Grimoire RiftEver since I played Final Fantasy Tactics on the Sony Playstation back in 1998, I’ve been addicted to strategy RPGs. When I heard that Square was releasing Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift on the DS, I pretty much circled it’s release date on my calendar like a third grader.

The game delivered as I expected it to. Tons of characters, jobs, classes, and lots of gameplay. I’m ashamed to admit how many hours this title has taken from me the past couple of months, but I guess that just shows that it is another well made game by the fine folks at Square-Enix. They addition of the seeq and gria races was pretty cool. The moogles are still my favorite, they just look funny to me. And ending every sentence with, “kupo” is pretty cool.

Not sure I ever figured out what a Grimoire of the Rift is exactly, but it was a pretty cool game.

The World Ends with You

The World Ends with YouJust finished playing The World Ends with You for the DS.  It’s one of the better games I’ve played in a while.  Very original game, not just another sequel.  The production values were top notch, some of the best graphics I’ve seen on the DS and the original music was really impressive.  It’s amazing how much work is put into some handheld games now.

A lot of work was put into the story, with a lot of surprises and along the way.  It style was a bit too teenish for me at times, but I’m probably too old to still be playing these games anyway.  The dual screen battles, while confusing at first were well done.  Controlling the bottom screen with the stylus while taking control of the top screen using the directional pad was a really slick idea.

Definitely one of the better RPG’s I’ve played in a long time.  Very refreshing to play something so new and original, instead of another Final Fantasy RPG (though they are usually great games).

Final Fantasy III

Final Fantasy IIISquare finally released Final Fantasy III in the US on the DS a year or so ago. I grew up playing the Final Fantasy games and was glad to finally have the chance to play it as it was only released in Japan back in 1990. All the graphics had been redone for the DS and the game looked great.

They sure don’t make RPG’s this difficult anymore. I just barely beat the final boss, thought it had me. The job system was very cool, and must’ve been an amazing addition when this game was originally released in 1990.
