Cell

CellThe library had a nice little section of recommended book by other fine library visiting folk. With me having been stumped on what to read for a bit now, this really came in handy. So browsed the shelves for something fine to check out.

I figured I’d try out Cell by Stephen King. With the hundreds of books I’ve read over the past few years, I was kinda shock that this would be the first by Mr. King by myself. Not sure how this came about, but I was determined to end my streak.

Cell was a pretty cool book. It’s really funny in about 10 years or so just how much the adoption of cell phones has grown. If this story took place today, I wonder if there would have been any survivors of the Pulse at all.

I also really liked how the whole Pulse was and the human mind were compared to computers and reboots. While a bit of it I disagreed with from a tech point of view, it was pretty cool and not your standard zombie approach.

Now that I’m done, I just realized how many questions I still have with this one. A fine book and glad someone put it on the recommended shelf.

Frozen in Time

Frozen in TimeI’ve been reading so much the past few years that I fell like I’ve gotten to the point where it’s tough to find something new and interesting. So the last couple of trips to the library have been getting a bit tougher for me.

I noticed Frozen in Time in the new arrivals section, and it looked like a WWII survival/rescue tale. I like such things, I feel like people today are real cry babies so hearing these amazing tales of hardship and survival always impress me.

These guys crashed and survived in Greenland for a very long time. Greenland is not a very hospitable place, and these unlucky guys kinda crashed on a moving glacier or all the spots on Greenland.

I did find the book a little slow to read in the beginning parts. I’m not sure if it was just me or maybe the tale itself, but towards the end I got into a bit more. Maybe the whole rescue and escape stuff is just more exciting to me.

I couldn’t imagine going through half as much as these guys went through. I will recommend they read this one the next time I hear someone complain that their coffee is cold and their day is now ruined as a result.

Gone Girl

Amazon has been recommending this book for quite some time. Whenever I check the best books of 2012 it always shows up. So when I noticed it was in at the library I figured to give it a shot.

I was glad I gave it a shot as it turned out to be pretty good. I really enjoyed the alternating point of view chapters by the two main characters. To read the same event from their differing point of views was interesting. I found myself alternating many times on which side I was thought was “right”.

In the end both characters were rather twisted in their own respective ways. Luckily twisted souls do make for more interesting reading.

No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission that Killed Obama

No Easy DayAs a guy who enjoys history and grew up playing with G.I. Joes I figured I’d give this one a shot. I have read a few of the other recent seal books and they were interesting, these guys are asked to do some rather crazy stuff.

This was a pretty good book and I found it pretty easy to read through. It did a great job of not only going through the author’s perspective on the famed mission, but also a good background on what these guys do to get to that point.

I also enjoyed all the detailed maps of the mission. I’ve always enjoyed looking at maps, I’m not sure exactly why but one of my favorite things when I was a kid was an atlas or road map. I’d just study them, and having them included really helps to piece together his account of the mission.

Overall I thought this was a pretty interesting book and I found myself reading through it rather quickly.

The Lord of the Rings

It dawned on me that I still had never read the Lord of the Rings books. I figured with all the reading I’ve done that past few years, this was a rather strange omission for myself. So my recent quest was to read all three.

Having seen the movies numerous times and knowing general story beforehand, it was kinda cool to read just how different the books were and how much didn’t make it into the films.

Like the movies my favorite book was the first, the Fellowship of the Ring. I just enjoyed the whole quest aspect, and when the whole fellowship is together. While there separate adventures were very cool, I do enjoy it best when they’re a group.

I was surprised at just how much the hobbits journeyed together before they finally met up with the rest of the crew. I also wasn’t aware that the elves held 3 of the other rings. I can’t recall if that was in the movie or not.

Excellent books and I’m glad I finally gave them a shot.

Those Guys Have All the Fun: Inside the World of ESPN

Those Guys Have All the Fun: The World of ESPNDecided to go with nonfiction on my latest read and figured to give the ESPN book a chance. While I haven’t watched much if any EPSN or really TV in general for several years now, I did use to watch SportsCenter and Baseball Tonight most every day/night in my younger years. So, I figured it’d be interesting to learn about the story behind all that good stuff.

This book was pretty big and comprehensive. It took me quite a while to read through and at times I found it a bit uninteresting. I think that was mainly due to the content when it was regarding the years that I was not an active viewer. The writing was very solid.

I did discover much, especially regarding the early years of the network. Those early chapters not only told the story of their beginnings but also did a solid job of reminding me of how it was like when cable tv was just coming about. I’d forgotten a lot of those early years, but it all came back pretty quickly. I grew up with cable tv, so it was interesting to read through those early years and recall how new it was to me and my brothers at the time.

While a bit too much content for me at times, it was still interesting to me.
