Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box

With the snow we got over the weekend I finally had a chance to beat Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box for the DS. I picked it up a few months ago, but have been too busy to really play it much.

It’s a puzzle game, and I do like the puzzles so I had to get it. The made an earlier one a few years back and I played through that one too, and this second one was just as good.

Some of the puzzles are very tough, I think there were 3 or so that I couldn’t solve. I’m very much impressed with the variety and difficulty of the puzzles. Solving a few of them did make me feel rather smart for a moment. Good stuff.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside StoryJust got done playing one of the finer DS games I’ve played in a while, Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story. This well crafted game provided much entertainment for a couple of weeks, such as while waiting for my car to be serviced. btw I will always bring a game to pass the time now when I’m getting the car serviced.

I’m sure I must’ve looked like the world’s biggest kid playing this game constantly, but I really did enjoy it so who cares.

Bowser’s Inside Story is the third installment in the Mario and Luigi RPG franchise. The game has some challenging puzzles, but nothing too crazy. Graphics are very impressive, and the music/sounds are really well done for a DS game. Mario and Luigi speaking Italian did bring a slight chuckle from me each time they conversed.

Playing as Bowser for a good portion of the game was a nice touch too. Growing up, I’d always found myself pitted against Bowser, so to play as him was cool. I do always kinda root for the bad guys in most fictitious things.

While I still have no idea what “I’ve Got Chortles!” means, Fawful was a pretty solid enemy. All in all a very entertaining and well made game.

Punch Out!!

Punch Out!!I do believe I’m addicted to Punch Out!! for the Wii. Mike Tyson’s Punch Out!! for the NES has always been an all time favorite of mine, a true classic. So when I heard that a new version was due out for the Wii, I was both excited and concerned that it might not be possible for it to live up to the expectations that I had of the game.

This game is a definite buy.  I actually woke up a little bit earlier on a work day just to sneak another shot at Don Fleminco.  Not sure I’ve done that in a while.  The controls are almost identical to the original, and it also supports the balance board, but I haven’t given that a shot yet.

Defending your title and the various boxer challenges give this game a lot of replay value. There’s a multiplayer mode, which seems pretty fun. The only drawback is no online play, but outside of that this game is a true masterpiece that manages to capture the fun I had back when it originally came out in 1987.

World of Goo

If you own a Wii then download World of Goo.  It’s a simple, yet addictive physics based puzzle game.  You move little gobs of goo from point A to point B.  Sound pretty basic, but makes for a very fun game.  I also found the humor to be very funny, especially the information superhighway stages.

The most amazing thing to me about this game is that it was made by two guys!  Recently it seems that you have to have at least an 8 figure budget to create a video game.  So to have a team of basically two able to churn out such a high quality game is really exciting to me.  It proves that with new avenues of content distribution it is possible to create and distribute a great game without having  a huge budget behind you.

Mega Man 9

Mega Man 9

My brothers and I grew up on the Mega Man games back on the NES. Unwrapping the latest installment on Christmas Day always brought a good deal of cheer. So when I heard that Capcom was releasing an all new Mega Man true to the original sprite days of the NES, we just had to purchase it via WiiWare.

The game is true to the NES days. It has the same graphics we remembered so well, the 8-bit great soundtrack, and many of the enemies we enjoying shooting so much.  The new bosses are impressive, including Splash Woman, the first female boss robot. A truly great game that stays true to it’s 8-bit roots.

However, let me warn you. This is one of the most challenging games I’ve played in a long time. It’s just down right hard. I’m not sure if I don’t have the same reflexes I possessed in sixth grade or they just upped the difficulty, but it sure is a challenge. Despite the challenge, I do highly recommend you give this game a try. Especially if you played the earlier installments in the late 80’s early 90’s.

The World Ends with You

The World Ends with YouJust finished playing The World Ends with You for the DS.  It’s one of the better games I’ve played in a while.  Very original game, not just another sequel.  The production values were top notch, some of the best graphics I’ve seen on the DS and the original music was really impressive.  It’s amazing how much work is put into some handheld games now.

A lot of work was put into the story, with a lot of surprises and along the way.  It style was a bit too teenish for me at times, but I’m probably too old to still be playing these games anyway.  The dual screen battles, while confusing at first were well done.  Controlling the bottom screen with the stylus while taking control of the top screen using the directional pad was a really slick idea.

Definitely one of the better RPG’s I’ve played in a long time.  Very refreshing to play something so new and original, instead of another Final Fantasy RPG (though they are usually great games).
