Chrono Trigger

Chrono TriggerBack in the early 90’s I was a huge fan of Japanese RPG’s on the NES and later the SNES. Looking back, it was my personal golden age of video games. However I never did get around to playing Chrono Trigger, it just happened to come out when I was graduating HS and starting college.

Chrono Trigger always makes it way high up on lists of greatest games ever, and after playing it through I must agree and place it very high on my list of all time greats as well. Even though this game was from super way back on the SNES in 1995, it amazingly still held up as a great game.

It seemed to have everything that I used to enjoy in games as a kid. The numerous characters you get, the rich story (time travel is always cool), and the numerous side quests and alternate endings are very cool too. All in all just everything that used to be great about Japanese RPG’s. Wish they still made them like this.

Fallout New Vegas

Fallout New VegasYou know a game is really great when you’re sad to beat it. Fallout New Vegas was at times near addictive and I’m sure I put way too much of my time into it, but it was entertainment well spent. There’s just something fun about walking around a post apocalyptic world for me.

The many quests and story were excellent, however it was a bit buggy for console game. Freezing up, characters floating in the air, were fairly common. But apparently a patch that was just release the past week should resolve most of technical issues mentioned above. Despite these bugs, the game is still overall great.

I decided to side with Mr. House, so that was the route I took. I also took Cass and Rex as my companions towards the end. I had Boone for a while early on, but lost him somehow (a bug maybe?). There’s just so much to do in the game, there’s so many different ways the story can be played.

What a great game, thinking about picking up some of the additional downloadable content or maybe even playing it through again but taking a different path.

Mass Effect

Mass EffectPicking up a used copy of Mass Effect for $15 was one of the better purchases I’ve made in a long time. This game is an amazingly well done sci-fi experience.  The music, graphics, worlds, aliens, and dialog were true to a traditional sci-fi movie.

The decision making that your allowed to make throughout the game makes for a very interested story. There many points where the story can go in completely different directions, with how you want to play it. Some of the decisions are pretty tough, with instances where either decision is a loss.

The voice overs are really well done. Especially with all the different alien races you encounter throughout your travels. If you own a xbox 360 and haven’t already played this already, I highly recommend that you do. After defying the odds and somehow saving the galaxy from the Reapers, I’m very much looking forward to the sequel in 2010.

Final Fantasy III

Final Fantasy IIISquare finally released Final Fantasy III in the US on the DS a year or so ago. I grew up playing the Final Fantasy games and was glad to finally have the chance to play it as it was only released in Japan back in 1990. All the graphics had been redone for the DS and the game looked great.

They sure don’t make RPG’s this difficult anymore. I just barely beat the final boss, thought it had me. The job system was very cool, and must’ve been an amazing addition when this game was originally released in 1990.
