Elvis the Dog

Elvis the DogElvis the dog passed away this morning. It was rather sudden and unexpected. He will be missed tremendously by all that knew him.

I have many, many fond memories of Elvis. He was a very gentle, kind, obedient, and probably the most loyal dog I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. His loyalty to my brother Frank was absolute and never wavered through the highs and lows of his life.

I’ll never forget just how tiny Elvis was when we picked up from the Philadelphia Airport. Though he’d grow up to be quite a large American Bulldog, he was barely larger than a shoe when we first met. I took him out of his little crate in the car and he just slept by my feet the whole ride home. His gentle behavior wasn’t just in that first car ride, but would persist for the entirety of his life. He was just a calm guy, who rarely if ever got himself into any trouble. He never ever took a piece of food that wasn’t given to him, he’d always make sure it was alright for him to do so first.

What would probably stand out to most were his looks. He had the American Bulldog face that was both gross and slobbery yet very handsome at the same time. He was instantly liked by all. He really didn’t bark too much until later in life (and when he did bark it was almost guaranteed that it was at nothing), but would communicate with whines and cries. He was easily the biggest baby I’d ever known. Scared of his own shadow, yet could pull a hole through a wall if he got too excited and misjudged his speed while turning a corner.

He loved his stuffed animal toys and would carry them with him at all times. Rarely could he be found without a stuffed animal nearby, even well into adulthood.

Elvis made it through two major knee surgeries a few years back. We even got veterinarian clinic remote treatment done for him for a few other maladies that he was suffering from. While by no means an ideal patient, he did eventually make an excellent recovery and we were all glad that he could resume his regular dog duties (sleeping, drooling, etc.).

He wasn’t much of a licker, which was fantastic considering how dirty his jowls were. Always full of slobber, a shake of his head was known to send it several feet and landing quite high up on walls. So high in fact it was difficult to fathom at times. He was so filthy and stinky, but so likable that it didn’t matter. Becoming drenched in slobber was easily worth the risk of getting close to such a fine dog.

I spent many hours protecting him from thunderstorms, lighting, stressful situations, etc. He would just sit pretty much on top of my feet (not that comfy for me) and I’d pet him until we rode out whatever scary situation was affecting him.

Our walks around Linwood were always a pleasure. While he was known to want to call it quits after only a block on many occasions, we did get around 2 miles or so for a bit. He always attracted quite the audience, with people constantly stopping to ask more about him, or waving from their cars at him. He was quite the popular walker.

I have so many great and wonderful memories of Elvis the Dog. While my family and I will be deeply saddened by his loss, I do know that we gave him the best life we possibly could and that he knew that. He was so happy to be a part of our family and to look after and protect my brother Frank while he was with us. He will be missed a great deal.

H is For Hawk

There is a really impressive hawk who hangs out in my trees. I guess living on the corner he gets a pretty great view on my property.

When I saw a book with a hawk on the cover I figured it’d be interesting to read and perhaps learn a bit more about these guys. While the book turned out to be a lot more about feelings and such than I was expecting, I still did learn a bit much about birds.

Actually I haven’t seen the guy since I read this book, but I’m pretty sure he’s been up there a few times and I’m sure he’s seen me. He’s quite a big hawk and was eating a squirrel on my front lawn. He let me get very close, which was a bit strange but most exciting.

Caulked a Shower

Was a bit excited and nervous to caulk a shower this weekend. I’ve noticed that some of the trim outside of the shower had gotten wet. So, water was finding it’s way out of the shower enough to take notice.

I did some research on how to caulk, there were some excellent videos and tutorials. I stopped using the shower for a few days (glad I bought a home with 2 bathrooms) and picked up some supplies. Went with the white silicone bathroom caulk. Figured white would look better in this case than clear.

Removing the old caulk was a little bit of a pain. It really sticks on there well. A razor and some patience helped me remove even the pesky parts. I then cleaned a bit more and waited a day or so for it to dry completely.

I did do some practice caulk runs on some pieces of cardboard. I can get a bit excited and was a bit afraid I would squeeze that gun much too hard and wind up with way too much caulk. Practicing was an excellent idea. After a few lines, I was confident to begin.

It was a pretty quick process. The gun came with a very useful little tool that really helped to run over the caulk and create a really clean looking line.

I’m still giving it a little bit more time to dry from yesterday, but am eager to see if it prevents the water from finding a way out.

Becoming Steve Jobs

Becoming Steve JobsGrowing up most of the kids I knew looked up to athletes or musicians, I always seemed to be interested in the two Steves who founded Apple. Can’t really explain why, but always was interested in them both and their company. There was just something cool about it, especially when I was growing up.

I kinda got away from technology for a bit in the mid nineties. I’m not sure exactly why. Apple was in pretty bad shape at the time, and a Windows world just didn’t seem very fun to me.

When Steve Jobs came back to the company, that’s when I seemed to get excited about the industry again. I remember making sure that I’d watch all the MacWorld live streams. I remember getting more excited than I should have been at the new announcements. It really was amazing to follow a company pretty much written off for dead to some how turn around and become the monster that it is today.

So when I saw another biography on Steve Jobs I picked it up without hesitation. I’ve read the Isaacson biography which was good, but this one I thought went into more depth on the guy as a person.

It was a really good book. I felt like it went into a lot more of his later life and not just the amazing tales of him being a genius-jerk during the late 70’s and 80’s.

His story of amazing rise, to fall and then to somehow even rise higher in the end is really more of a Hollywood story than real life. Very interesting book.

38

Wow, hard to believe I turned 38 on Thursday. It doesn’t really hit me how old I am until I’m asked my age. But when I do the math is does add up.

This year I just went to work as usual. I got a very cool DC comics Green Lantern vs. Sinestro Lego set. It’s not easy to put a set together during a work day, but I did complete it with just a few minutes to spare in the day. It’s a pretty cool one, I like the see thru green pieces.

I was pleasantly surprised to receive 3 peanut butter cookies. They were really good! Plus got a chance to play a little bit of ping pong. Good times.

I was beginning to think that perhaps my co-workers hadn’t planned anything, but fairly late in the day I saw people walking to the meeting room. Which surely can only mean that a cake was in the building.

It was cool, they put a foam replica of Mjolnir (Thor’s hammer) on the cake. I pretending it was difficult to lift, but eventually lifted it and then went on to slice up some cake. It was a pink plastic knife, no sure why but that stood out to me.

Work birthdays have been most awkward here, and this one was surely no exception. I cannot explain it, but when everyone is together in that room there’s just an awkwardness that is present but difficult to explain. I felt really old when they asked me what my age was.

I then stopped over my parents for some chicken parm and an ice cream cake. More food! They gave me some grilling supplies. So I should get that grill working soon.

Didn’t do too much after that. I was a bit worn out with the longer work days this week. All in all not too shabby of a day.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask

Majora's MaskThe strange and bizarre Majora’s Mask was one game that I had missed out on. I believe it came out towards the end of the N64 days and I just wasting playing much back then. When I saw that it was being re-released on the 3DS I knew I’d have to give it a shot.

It was really creepy. The whole mood was just creepy. A scary face on the moon crashing down, the world ending on almost every play, and just the strange towns people made for a really creepy experience. It was most bizarre.

The game itself was pretty great. I got it during the coldest winter I could recall, so it gave me something to curl up into a ball and entertain myself with for a bit.

The game was very difficult. I have no idea how kids figured some of it out, especially before the Internet was so popular when it was first released. I was thoroughly stumped many times. I still haven’t beaten the last boss, but will have to give him some more tries. Again, the last boss is so very bizarre.

All in all a very interesting game that brought some entertainment during a very cold and lazy time.
